Breakup hurts, there’s no argument in that.
The thing about breakups is that when we fall in love, we don’t really think of the fact that we could potentially break up with this person.
We are too focused on love and the wonderful feelings of it that we forget to prepare ourselves for the possibility of breakup.
Thus, instead of moping for months after a breakup, cheer up with these breakup quotes. These are not really super positive quotes but they do hold the truth.
On days when you’re too consumed with the pain of a breakup, and life may seem blurry, truthful quotes are helpful.
1. On Indifference
It’s indifference that breaks hearts, not love. ~ Marty Rubin
Breakup is a complicated aspect of life, people. But one thing I’m certain of is that it can be caused by so many things. Topping that list would be indifference. More often than not, we spend so much time playing the blame game. Especially if the breakup is not pretty. And yes, there’s probably someone to blame, but who cares? At the end of the day, you two would still take two separate cabs. Why not settle with indifference instead of blaming the other one?
2. On Life’s Mess
Life is messy. ~ Shannon Alder
I cannot agree more. Life sure is messy and it’s a lot messier when you breakup with someone. I’m not saying do not breakup or do everything you can to save the relationship. If it doesn’t feel right anymore, don’t force the issue. What I’m trying to say is we shouldn’t blame breakups for our messy life. Because it already is messy. Don’t put the blame on someone else if you’re screwing things up. You have a broken heart, girl, of course you’ll screw some things up.
3. On Missing Something
The only way to be sure of catching a train is to miss the one before it. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton
Gilbert Chesterton is so on point with this. Most of us see heartbreaks as the most painful event in life. Yeah right. I know, it hurts. But may I also say that this pain will go away sooner than you thought. And maybe there’s a bigger reason for the breakup. Maybe this guy is not the one for you. Maybe he has a bad secret and this universe is just protecting you. Maybe someone better will come and this time, you’ll catch it for good.
4. On Being Priority
Never allow someone to be your top priority while allowing yourself to be their option. ~ Mark Twain
If you prioritize someone but he just sees you as an option, that is your big, glowing sign that you should end things with him. Yes. As much as you want to stay because of love, I don’t think it’s right to be with someone who doesn’t prioritize you. I mean, that’s what relationships are for, right? Prioritization is one important aspect of it. Keep in mind that you are worthy of someone who knows how to love you as much as you love him.
5. On Respect
You can keep your love, I will keep my respect. ~ Amit Kalantri
Breaking up with someone who doesn’t know how to respect you sure is painful, especially if you’re living in denial and you’re convincing yourself he will (someday) learn to respect you. I’m not sure if he will but one thing for sure, you are worthy of respect. So swallow the pain and move forward. Leave him behind because whoever this person is, he should learn how to respect women first, before he goes falling in love with them.
6. On Cold Endings
The hottest love has the coldest endings. ~ Socrates
I don’t know about you but Socrates is a gem. A gem, people. And I don’t think I can argue with this quote. The thing about love is that when we feel it, we feel nothing else. We feel like we should do everything we can to make this person feel loved. But as what Socrates said, the hottest love has the coldest endings. It sure is painful to know but the more you love a person, the more painful it is when you have to end things with him.
7. On Wondering About the Come Back
They say that if you love someone you should let them go, but they never say what to do when they don’t come back. ~ Anonymous
I don’t think there’s any other quote that can describe the grand gush of emotions when someone doesn’t come back. The thing about love is that it has no assurance of any kind. When you let a person go, there’s no assurance he will come back. And if you choose not to let him go, he will feel choked and he would still leave. So there’s no other choice here. All you can do is figure out what to do when your lover does not come back.
8. On What’s Meant To Happen
The heart was made to be broken. ~ Oscar Wilde
On days when breakup feels so bad… on moments when you feel like you’re running out of tears or you feel so tired of crying, keep in mind that the heart is meant to be broken. Trust Oscar Wilde here, my friends. The heart is there, beating, to remind us every day that we are still alive. We feel. But at the same time, keep in mind that the heart do not always stay whole.
9. On Seeing the Stars
Don’t cry when the sun is down because the tears won’t let you see the stars. ~ Violeta Para
There are no arguments on how painful love and breakups can be. But the thing is, instead of spending countless nights crying and wailing and drinking yourself to sleep because you feel like you can’t handle the pain any longer, keep in mind that the sun goes down for a reason. Pain and breakup both happen for a reason. It is for us to see the stars. To see the other beautiful things in life.
10. On Letting the Light In
The only whole heart is a broken one because it lets the light in. ~ David Wolpe
I’m not going to lie, when we’re in the middle of a breakup, there’s no quote that can pacify the pain. I understand if you won’t get what David Wolpe is trying to say. But when your mind is a little clearer, remind yourself of the beauty of the light. And there’s no other way for a light to get to you but through the cracks of a broken heart. I’m not saying you live a dark life until you experience breakup. I’m saying even broken things are beautiful. Because it lets the light in.
11. On Unhurt
You fell in love with a storm. Did you really think you would get out unscathed? ~ Nikita Gill
Poet Nikita Gill is on point with this. The thing about love is that we think it’s this rainbows and butterflies thing. It’s this oh so awesome experience. It’s not always like this. More often than not, breakups happen because things don’t go as planned or as expected. Sometimes, it’s because of indifference. Whatever the reason is, don’t expect that all relationships end well. There’s no such thing as falling in love and falling out of love, unscarred.
12. On Simplicity
When people complain of your complexity, they fail to remember that they made fun of your simplicity. ~ Michael Bassey Johnson
This is perhaps one of the most annoying aspects of love and life. People have this never-ending list of complaints about their loved ones – from the petty things like snoring to the bigger things like always getting home late. Seriously? Why be in a relationship when all you do is complain? If this sounds like the partner you just broke up with, don’t feel bad about it. I know it hurts, but you deserve someone better.
13. On Feeling the Pain
No matter how hard your heart is broken, the world doesn’t stop for your grief. ~ Faraaz Kazi
As much as you want the world to pause, even just for a few hours until you catch your breath after too much crying, that’s not going to happen. Not now, not ever. Sorry to burst your bubble dear, but no matter painful life feels to be, the world will keep on going. The sun will set and the moon will shine and tomorrow will arrive. And you will still be in pain. So instead of stressing yourself out about it, just know that breakups are supposed to be painful, but it will pass.
14. On Wariness
When you leave weary of me without a work, I shall gently let you go. ~ Kim Sowol
For most people, love means holding on. It’s not, okay? Sure, we all got to hold on and stay strong and have more faith. But there will come a time when your mind and body and soul are telling you to stop it. Stop holding on. Because maybe, that person is not worthy. Let go, feel the pain, and know that it’s for the best. Because it is. Because when you let go and the other person doesn’t seem to care, you’d know that it’s the right decision.
15. On Needing No One But Yourself
No girl should ever forget that she doesn’t need anyone who doesn’t need her. ~ Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe is all about positivity here, and yes, this is one important reminder. On every breakup you deal with, try to remember who you were before you had that relationship. And in case you can’t remember, here’s a hint: you were once a strong, independent woman who survived this world with the help of her friends and family. So this guy might have chosen to leave you, but as long as you got yourself, you’ll be fine.
16. On What Will Be
Surrender to what is. Let go of what was. Have faith in what will be. ~ Sonia Ricotti
The problem is not that you’re in pain. Breakups are supposed to be painful. The problem is that you spend long months dwelling in that pain. you’re practically drowning yourself in it. Keep your head up, girl. Be reminded that what happened already happened, and the universe allowed it because it has better plans for you. Stop dwelling on the people who decided to leave you. Focus on building a better you instead and believe it or not, your exes will feel sorry they left you.
17. On Not Giving a F*ck
Broken people are the most dangerous… because they just don’t give a f*ck. ~ Ashley Jade
If there’s one good thing about being heartbroken, it’s probably the fact that you don’t care about anything else. Okay, maybe this is a mix of good and bad. It’s good because you don’t care about what other people think. You’re too busy with the pain. But at the same time, it’s bad because chances are, you also don’t care about what the world brings. Keep yourself excited of tomorrow, dear. You never know what it will bring…
18. On Goodbyes
If she says goodbye, someone else will say hi. ~ Amit Kalantri
I know it’s not easy to remember this. Because when you just had a breakup, chances are you are more focused on well, feeling broken. But each day that passes, remind yourself that this pain shall pass. And if that guy had the guts to leave you behind, or to act unworthy of your love, then someone else will have the guts to say hi. Someone who is actually worthy of your love and who will value you as well.
19. On Doing What’s Best for You
And now I’ll do what’s best for me. ~ John Green
Don’t we all just love John Green? Sometimes, instead of focusing on the pain, or spending days thinking why he left you or why it didn’t work, it’s better to focus on something more positive. Like doing what’s best for you. Allowing yourself to grow. Maybe the breakup is the universe’s way of telling you that such relationship is not good for you. Love sometimes blinds us, you know. Thus, embrace the pain and do whatever makes your soul happy.
20. On Finding the Good
Thank god I found the good in goodbye. ~ Beyoncé
Just like John Green, Queen Bey is also quite witty when it comes to love and breakups. And this quote is priceless. When was the last time you said goodbye to someone? And did you ever wonder what’s the good in that goodbye? No. Probably not. Because who the heck thinks about the good in goodbye? But clearly, Beyoncé has thought about it. some goodbyes are good, my friend. You just have to be willing to see it through.
21. On Wandering
You can’t wander around and think the wandering will call them back. ~ David Levithan
To keep it short and straight to the point, do not expect anything in return. Do not expect the universe to fix your broken relationship just because you showed good faith and exerted efforts in fixing it too. There’s no other way to say this in a less painful way but the thing is, most people think if they just hold on tighter, or show efforts of trying to fix a relationship, the universe will help fix it for them. Not gonna happen, my friend.
22. On Loving Yourself First
Cease seeking a stranger’s heart to love when your own remains neglected. ~ Sara Serona
Sometimes, we hold on to an unhealthy relationship because we think it will become better soon. Or maybe because we’re kind people wanting to love others who we believe needs more love. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with that. But don’t forget that you should also love yourself all the time. As what Sara Serona said, don’t let your heart remain neglected. Don’t focus on loving someone else who doesn’t love you back as much.
23. On Worth the Pain
Everyone is gonna hurt you. You just have to figure out which people are worth the pain. ~ Bob Marley
I just can’t get enough of this Marley quote. Clearly, we often forget that pain is part of life. Tell me, what’s the first thought you have when the idea that you just broke up with someone finally sunk? I’m pretty sure you have a mix of pain and anger and all sorts of similarly heavy emotions. But please, keep in mind that there’s no such thing as being spared from pain. there is only deciding whether you let this person hurt you.
24. On Human Worth
Have you ever wondered what a human life is worth? ~ Ruta Sepetys
This is probably one of the most common thoughts we have in mind when in the middle of absorbing all the bits of a breakup. We end up thinking about the failed relationship and the worth of life and the pain future has in stored for you. As much as I want to solve this dilemma, I just can’t. Because there’s really no such thing as final answer to knowing your worth. Final answer to knowing human’s worth in general. So stop thinking about it. You’re hurting yourself more.
25. On Letting Go
Once you’re in the air, there’s nothing you can do but let go. ~ Lauren Oliver
Boy are we obsessed with planning and taking control. Seriously? Why would you go this route? It hurts, I know. But there’s really nothing much you can do. There’s no taking a pill and magically, it will heal the pain. Even in the most painful breakups, there’s only one thing you can do: let go. Let go of the what if’s and the questions and the hopes. If your gut is telling you there’s no chance for the relationship to be fixed, don’t force it.
26. On Breathing and Crying
Breathing is hard. When you cry so much, it makes you realize that breathing is hard. ~ David Levithan
This is pretty much like, the more you cry, the less you see. Crying means having tears in your eyes and seeing nothing but a blur. That’s pretty much the same as crying and crying until your lungs can’t keep up anymore. Until your mind and body can’t keep up with the drowning in pain drama. Is this really what you want to happen in your life? Do you really want to run out of tears for other better things that are actually more worthy of crying?
27. On the Difference of Know and Knew
It’s sad when someone you know becomes someone you knew. ~ Henry Rollins
I don’t think there’s anything more painful than someone you know becomes someone you knew. This Henry Rollins quote can be as literal as it can be but it remains true. Who wants to refer to someone as a person he knew instead of a person he knows? Especially if this person is someone you love… but life is not as kind as you think it is. Sometimes, we have these people transform from know to knew. That’s how it works. Painful, but that’s just how it works.
28. On the Art of Getting Over
If someone you love hurts you, cry like a river, build a bridge, and get over it. ~ Anonymous
This quote is probably one of the best quotes about getting over. It take a strong person to get over someone. And if you’ve done it before then I’m pretty sure you can do it again. And if you don’t think you can, remind yourself of the wonderful feeling you felt back when you can finally tell yourself you’re done with him. See, breakups don’t just happen once. You gotta learn how to get over it gloriously.
29. On Experiencing Hurt
He who has never experienced hurt cannot experience true love. ~ Tristan Joo
When talking about hurt, most people would say how much they hate it, and how much they exert extra efforts trying to avoid it. I mean, I’m not saying allow yourself to be so open this world can hurt you anytime it wants. Because life a meanie, you know… I’m saying be open to the idea of being hurt. Of being in pain. Of dealing with love and breakups. Because only when you feel hurt that you will cherish love more.
30. On Feeling Alive
And now you’ve lost the only thing that ever made you feel alive. ~ Keith Urban
When breakup takes place, most of us would think “I can’t live life anymore.” Yeah right. If you say you can’t feel, that’s understandable because, well, pain can be numbing. But not being able to live life? Come on… we all know we have these special people who makes us feel alive, but we also know we were already doing fine before they became part of us. Get a grip and stay faithful with yourself. You’ll be fine.
31. On the Death of Love
Love never dies a natural death. ~ Anais Nin
When did love die? When does love bloom again? Nobody knows. But what I personally know is that a love that dies is not a story of death. It’s a story of so much more. and you get to decide what kind of story it will be. If you see breakup as a breakup, period, that’s what it’s going to be. But if you’ll see it as a chance to explore and get to know other people, then that sure is a better perspective.
